BEAUMONT, Tx. -  McNeese State's volleyball team upset Lamar in five sets here Friday night 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 to improve to 16-6 overall and 4-4 in league play.  Lamar entered the match as the second place team in the West Division behind Saturday's opponent, Sam Houston State.  The loss dropped Lamar to 11-9 overall and 6-3 in league play.

Priscilla Massengale led all players with 19 kills while Chanel Tyler added 15 and Nicole Bowden was credited with 10.

Senior setter Sarah Cartie picked up her 4,000th career assists in the second set.  Cartie assisted fellow classmate, Chanel Tyler on a kill for a 6-3 Cowgirl lead. Cartie recorded a match high 46 assists.

Freshman Libero Whitney Ellisor led all players with a match and career high 23 digs and four other Cowgirls also recorded double figure digs.  Cartie completed her double-double with 15 digs, Massengale also ended the match with a double-double with 15 digs and Tyler added 11 digs for her double-double.  Katie Kennedy was the other Cowgirl to record double figure digs with 13.

"We showed tremendous heart with the ability to keep our minds in the match and to think and believe we can do that.  It was great to see Chanel Tyler come back after struggling in the fourth set.  Our middles played extremely and to have five players finish in double figure digs was big.  This was the most complete match we played since conference play started.  We have to strap it on and play the top team in the West in less than 24 hours," said head coach Dale Starr.

The Cowgirls came back in the fifth set after Lamar took a 7-1 lead.  The Cowgirl stayed poised and did what they had to do to get back into the match.  Cartie tied the match at nine all with a kill then the Cowgirls took a 10-9 lead on a Erin Huckabay kill.  Lamar tied the match at 10 all for the last time in the set.  Tyler gave the Cowgirls the lead for good on a kill and with McNeese leading 14-13, the Cowgirls won the set and the match on a Lamar hitting error.

McNeese will travel to Sam Houston State, the first place team in the West at 4 p.m. Saturday.
