Missouri City, TX -- McNeese State’s Derek Bonvillain and Ben Suarez shot two of the better scores on Tuesday but the Cowboys still finished in the back of the pack at the Houston Baptist Husky men’s intercollegiate golf tournament on Tuesday.
Rain forced the tourney to be cut to a 36 hole event and it was still wet and soggy when the players went out Tuesday morning to play. Play had been halted on Monday after only nine holes had been played.
Bonvillain shot a two over par 74 for his final round on Tuesday while Suarez came in with a three over 75. Bonvillain finished at 152 for a tie for 28th place and Suarez closed with a 153 for as tie for 33rd.
As a team the Cowboys posted a 615 to tie for ninth place over the 7,114 yard Sienna Plantation golf course. They had scored 312 in their first round and knocked nine shots off that total for a 303 in the afternoon.
The University of Houston took the team title with a 578 and was followed by UL-Monroe at 586, Oklahoma Christian 593, Nicholls State 598, East Central Univ. 601, Centenary and UT Pan American 602, Drake 604 and the Cowboys and host Houston Baptist at 615.
Houston’s Jackie Lindsey claimed individual honors with 68-75—143.
Also for the Cowboys, David Wiggins tied for 37th at 77-77—154, Austin Snell was 47th with 79-77—156 and Scott Backsrom was 59th with 94-85—179.
Next week the Cowboys will close out their fall schedule by playing in the Southeastern Louisiana hosted Carter Plantation classic.
