Cowgirls Fall Short In Comeback Against Texas State

LAKE CHARLES, LA -- McNeese State's volleyball team put up a good fight here Saturday but fell short in a 3-2 five set loss to Texas State by the scores of 15-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 9-15.

"Its a disappointing loss at home but Texas State is a very good team and they played really well in games 1-5 and did enough to beat us. Our ball control was pretty good today and we started serving well in games three and four. Our middles also played well its just Texas State is a good team and once they get rolling, they are hard to stop," said head coach Dale Starr.

After trailing 2-1 in the overall match, McNeese avoided the straight set sweep by coming back and winning a close third set 25-21. The Cowgirls weren't ready for the match to end as the evened the overall match to two set apiece with a fourth set 25-18 win, sending the match into a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set, Texas State took the early lead and never looked back as they went on to win the set 15-9 and the overall match to improve to 14-12 overall and 8-3 in the SLC.

For the second straight match, McNeese had several players record double figure kills. Freshman Priscilla Massengale led McNeese with 14 kills and tied for a team high 15 digs for a double-double. Sophomore Nicole Bowden added 11 kills and senior Chanel Tyler and sophomore Erin Huckabay both ended the match with 10 kills apiece. Senior setter Sarah Cartie recorded a match high 44 assist while freshman libero Whitney Ellisor also tied for a team high 15 digs. Sophomore Katie Kennedy was the only other player to record double figure digs with 11.

McNeese 17-8, 5-6 SLC will be on the road for their next three matches at Central Arkansas and Northwestern State this weekend then at Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 10 before returning home to conclude the regular season against Nicholls State and Southeastern La. Nov. 13 and 14.
