Cowgirls Fall To Central Arkansas In Straight Sets

CONWAY, Ar.-- McNeese State's volleyball team dropped a straight set Southland Conference match at Central Arkansas here tonight by the scores of 21-25, 23-25, 18-25 to fall to 17-9 overall and 5-7 in conference. Central Arkansas improved to 24-3 overall and 13-0 in the SLC and increased their winning streak to seven matches.


Priscilla Massengale led the Cowgirls with nine kills and Chanel Tyler led with 10 digs. Nicole Bowden produced a .357 hitting percent with six kills on 14 attempts and one error. Sarah Cartie ended the match with 23 assist. Erin Huckabay tied her career high and recorded a match high with five blocks.


The first set of the match was back and forth and included several ties. The Cowgirls just couldn't get ahead and trailed by one point at 21-20. UCA scored three straight points to take a 24-20 lead but a kill by Massengale kept the Cowgirls alive at 24-21. UCA won the first set on a Cowgirl error.


The second set was almost identical to the first in that there were several ties. With the Cowgirls trailing 20-15, McNeese outscored UCA 7-2 to tie the match at 22 all on another Massengale kill. Back to back kills by UCA gave the Sugar Bears a 24-22 lead. After a McNeese timeout, UCA's Evaree Franklin committed a service error for a 24-23 UCA lead. UCA' Jessica Hayes gave the Sugar Bears the 25-23 second set victory with a kill.


McNeese trailed early in the third set but came back to take a brief lead at 7-6 on an Ayshin Vasserr kill. After a Cowgirl service error, UCA took the lead for good an never looked back as they went on to win the third set and the overall match.


McNeese returns to action Saturday when the Cowgirls travel to Natchitoches for a 6 p.m. match against Northwestern State.
