LAKE CHARLES-- It wasn't a good shooting night from the field for McNeese State nor Northwestern State but the Lady Demons made up for it at the free throw line and picked a 65-52 SLC win over the Cowgirls here Wednesday night.

Northwestern State (12-8, 5-2 SLC) made 28 of 34 free throws and scored 13 of their final 15 points from the charity stripe in the final 3:51 of the game.

McNeese trailed 51-40 at that point but slowly cut into the lead but could only get as close as seven points with 1:22 left in the game. From here on out the Cowgirls would foul with the hopes the Lady Demons wouldn't make their free throws, but they did and that is where the game was won.

McNeese's Kendra Wells recorded her eighth career double-double with a game high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Wells was the only McNeese player to score in double figures. Kiara Johnson, the Cowgirls' leading scorer was held to six points, all coming from the free throw line. Johnson entered the game averaging 14.7 ppg. and a 50.9 field goal percent. She ended the game 0-6 from the field and with nine rebounds.

As a team, the Cowgirls shot 24.2 percent from the field, making only 16 of 66 attempts. The Cowgirls also struggled from three-point range (1-14) with reserve Ne'Aisha Anderson making the only three-pointer for the Cowgirls.

Northwestern State didn't shoot much better from the field either as they made 16 of 56 from the field, with five baskets coming from three-point range. The Demons were led in scoring by Brittiany Houston's 14 points. Houston scored nine of her 14 points off free throws. Also scoring in double figures was Lyndzee Greene with 10. Sherrion Thomas led Northwestern State with 14 rebounds.

McNeese (5-15, 1-6 SLC) will face Texas State at 4 p.m. Saturday. This game will be played at Jennings High School.
