LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese State's women's tennis team will open their 2010 season Friday (weather permitting) when they will host Alcorn State in an 11 a.m. match at the Recreational Courts on campus.
The Cowgirls return six players from a team that posted a 6-14 overall record under first year head coach Magali Risoleo. The squad is made up of seniors Vicky Martinez, Petra Gudelj and Inga Efimenko, juniors Ralista Pirdopska and Maria Frausto. The sophomores are Tea Tvrtkovic and Lake Charles native Kwynn Biggs. The lone freshman is Ilona Serchenko.
Efimenko posted the most victories a year ago with eight, all coming from the no. 6 singles.
The top four spots in the lineup are projected to be Pirdopska at the no. 1 singles, Serchenko at no. 2, Martinez (no. 3), Gudelj (no. 4). Risoleo will rotate Tvrtkovic, Frausto, Efimenko and Biggs at the no. 5 and 6 singles.
The no. 1 doubles team is expected to be Pirdopska and Martinez, the no. 2 team will be Rocio and Gudelj with the third doubles team to be either Biggs and Serchenko or Tvrtkovic and Efimenko.
Following Friday's match, the Cowgirls will head to New Orleans for a Saturday match at Loyola and a Sunday match at Xavier. Both matches have 11 a.m. starting times.
The next home match for the Cowgirls will be on Feb. 20 against Louisiana Tech.
