Louisiana-Lafayette got a pair of home runs from Kyle Olasin and took advantage of four McNeese State errors for a 10-2 baseball victory over the Cowboys here Tuesday night.
Matt Broussard hurled seven innings of one-hit, scoreless ball to claim the pitching victory for the Cajuns, now 7-9-1 on the season. The Cowboys, who had only three hits the game, fell to 9-8.
McNeese is back in action Wednesday in Baton Rouge against nationally ranked LSU.
Broussard, now 1-0, and the Cowboys’ Matt Click were in a pitching duel over the first few innings until the Cajuns erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth. Olasin started things off with a solo home run. Click, now 0-1, then hit Travis Whipple and he stole second before catcher Thad Griffen took first on an error by Cowboy third baseman Steven Irvine which enabled Whipple to score.
Griffen later scored on an error by Shon Landry and the fourth ULL run crossed over on a double by Matt Goulas.
Click went on to finish that inning and pitched into the sixth when he was relieved. He still gave up only three hits and only one of the four runs he relinquished was earned.
The Cajuns added two runs in the seventh, Alex Fuselier getting on base on another Cowboy error and Olasin plating him on an inside the park home run. ULL also added two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.
McNeese’s only runs came in the bottom of the eighth and off ULL reliefer Justin Robichaux.
Matt Fontenot walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a single by Josh Lebert, went to third when Sam Merrill walked and scored when Irvine hit into a double play. Lebert then scored on a wild pitch.
Following Click to the mound for the Cowboys were Michael Robbins who didn’t get an out and allowed two hits and two unearned runs, Tommy Luce who pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two hits and two unearned runs and Travis Bailey who hurled one inning and gave up two hits and two earned runs.
Leading the ULL nine hit attack was Olasin with his two home runs and three RBIs. He was three for five as he also had a triple. Whipple and Goulas both had two hits.
The Cowboys’ three hits were produced by Nick Eubanks, Justin Beitzel and Lebert.
Landry had his 15 game hitting streak stopped in the game.
McNeese and ULL will meet again this season, playing in Lafayette on April 28.
