SAN MARCOS, TX – Southland Conference leading Texas State completed a three game sweep of McNeese State’s Cowboys with a 15-2 seven inning victory on Sunday.
It was the second straight lap of the Cowboys made by the Bobcats who had won Saturday’s game by a 16-6 count in the same number of innings.
With the victory Texas State (31-10) lifted its league leading record to 18-5 and moved into a three and one-half game lead over second place Southeastern Louisiana (15-9) in the standings.
The loss dropped the Cowboys to 8-16 in league play and put them in a tie for 10th place in the standings.
McNeese had opened Sunday’s finale with a run in the first inning with Shon Landry singling in Steven Irvine from third. Irvine had gained first base on a single, moved to second on a Texas State throwing error and advanced to third on a balk.
The Bobcats came back with a run in the bottom of the inning, added one in the second and then two in the third to take the lead for good. McNeese scored only one more run, that in the third with Taylor Freeman singling in Irvine, who had singled and advanced to second when Landry was hit by a pitch.
Texas State went on to score three in both the fourth and fifth innings and five in the sixth as the Cowboys sent five pitchers to the mound. Tyler Davis started on the mound for McNeese and absorbed the loss, giving up seven hits and seven runs (six earned) while walking five and striking out three.
Ryan Frantz relieved in the fourth and hurled 1.1 innings of two-hit, three run ball while Travis Bailey pitched one-third of an inning giving up three hits and four runs and Scott Holstein gave up two hits and one run in a third of an inning.
Jordan LeGros was the final pitcher for the Cowboys, getting the last out in the bottom of the sixth.
Brian Borski hurled a complete game for the Bobcats, giving up seven hits and two runs, only one of them earned. He walked two and struckout four and ran his record to 5-2. Davis is now 4-3 for the Cowboys.
For the third straight game, Irvine had two hits for the Cowboys and he was the only one with more than one.
Texas State had 14 hits and three of them were home runs by Spenser Dennis, Laurn Randell and Kyle Livingston.
McNeese, now 19-21 and on a four game losing streak, will be back in action Tuesday when the Cowboys travel to Lafayette to play Louisiana-Lafayette. They will be at home to Houston on Wednesday and then tackle Lamar in a three game series beginning Friday.
