McNeese State and UT San Antonio tied up in another slugger’s outing Sunday afternoon and the Roadrunners came out on top in a 13-11 victory.
The win gave UTSA a sweep of the Cowboys in a three game series that featured 87 hits and 23 home runs. In Sunday’s finale, both teams had 13 hits. The Cowboys had four home runs and UTSA two.
Like the previous two games, McNeese jumped off the early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning with a three run homer by Lee Orr (his 15th of the season) being the big blow.
UTSA came back with two runs in the second and then took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth. The Roadrunners added four in the six and two in the seventh whle the Cowboys came up with one in the fifth, four in the six and one in the eight.
Along the way the Roadrunners got home runs from Ryan Hutson and Casey Selsor while the Cowboys also had homers from Steven Irvine, Taylor Freeman and Ryan Brauninger.
Jose Hernandez led the UTSA hitting attack with three hits and four RBIs. Brauninger had two hits and three RBIs for the Cowboys while Orr also had two hits and three RBIs.
Ryan Proudfoot started on the mound for the Roadrunners and claimed the victory, his second against one loss. He hurled five innings, giving up six hits and six runs. Kevin Clarke pitched the final four innings and collected the save.
Jonathan Conrad started for the Cowboys and gave up six hits and seven runs in four innings, being tagged with his sixth loss against two victories.
The victory sends UTSA’s record to 29-21 overall and to 18-12 in league action and left McNeese at 20-29 and 9-21.
McNeese seniors honored prior to the start of the game were Sam Merrill, Ryan Frantz, Brauninger, Michael Robbins, Shon Landry, Scott Holstein and Dustin Guidry.
McNeese will now close out its season in a three game SLC series against Nicholls State in Thibodaux beginning Thursday.
