CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOSLAKE CHARLES – McNeese capped the first week of fall camp on Sunday with another outing in shorts and shoulder pads, but the intensity is sure to ramp up on Monday when the team goes in full pads for the first time.
Â
Several Cowboys had some nice plays during the two-hour practice including junior wide receiver
Damon Gladney who made several nice catches on some deep routes.
Â
Senior quarterback
Daniel Sams continues to look strong with delivering the pass and is just as flashy with his stutter-step footwork to bolster his scrambling ability.
Â
Defensively, the secondary is showing signs of brilliance behind the play of seniors
Wallace Scott and
Brent Spikes.
Â
"Spikes started out playing the Buck position, which is a nickel, and now he's at weak safety and into the boundary," said defensive coordinator
Lance Guidry. "He's played different spots which is a big asset because he pretty much knows what everybody is supposed to be doing.
Â
"
Wallace Scott is another one. He played free safety as a freshman and got moved to linebacker because we lost some linebackers. He stayed at backer last year and is now back at safety. So we feel with those two guys, they really know the defense well. We're feeling really good about our two high safeties."
Â
The Cowboys will practice all week leading up to Saturday's 6 p.m. scrimmage, the first of two preseason contests.Â
