BATON ROUGE – Distance runners Alison Smegal and Christoph Graf etched their names in the McNeese track and field record book on Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet as the two set school records in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
 
Smegal became the first Cowgirl runner to dip below the 11-minute mark in the event, winning Saturday's race with a time of 10:54.54, breaking a 13-year old record of 11:01.70 held by Helen Kibby in 2004.
 
Graf's time was just as impressive as his first place mark of 8:49.42 clipped the previous record of 8:53.0 held by David Kohrs and set 38 years ago in 1979.
 
"Both runners did a tremendous job," said head coach Brendon Gilroy. "Two records in the same event and in the same meet is quite an accomplishment."
 
In all, 16 athletes set new personal records on the day including Smegal's and Graf's marks.
 
Shannon McLellan had a third place finish in the 1500-meter B Section with a PR time of 4:47.11. Also in that event, three other Cowgirl runners set new PRs – Jessica Fox (5:14.11), Edna Cheptum (5:19.92) and Celeste Cordova (5:22.56)
 
Taneisha Allen clocked a 25.43 for a new PR in the 200-meters and in the 100-meter hurdles, Ashley Johnson timed a new personal best of 15.15.
 
In the women's field events, Alanna Arvie placed seventh in the shot put with a PR mark of 46-07.5 and in the javelin, Alison Blanchard marked a 116-1 for a new PR while Morgan Woods, the Southland Conference's No. 2 javelin thrower, placed fifth at 145-8.
 
On the men's side, Blake Comeaux placed fifth in the 400-meter B Section with a PR time of 47.95. In the 100 meters, both Tyler Syrie (10.79) and Gared Brown (10.92) each set new PRs while Ethan Rapp clocked a 22.77 in the 200-meters for a personal record.
 
Following Graf in the steeplechase, Brian Flanagan placed third with a PR time of 9:29.08.
 
"We had some really solid performances out there today," said Gilroy.
 
The team will be back in action next Saturday when it competes at the Northwestern State/Leon Johnson Invitational in the final tune-up before the Southland Conference meet.
