Gonzales Hits Pair of Home Runs In 7-3 Victory Over Southern

BATON ROUGE- Senior OF Julian Gonzales hit a pair of home runs and drove in three as the McNeese Cowboys (7-2) defeated the Southern Jaguars (2-7) Tuesday night at Lee-Hines Stadium. Burrell Jones started the Cowboy's first road contest of the season and pitched 3.2 innings allowing just two runs and fanned two batters to earn him the victory. Christian Vega, Brian Shadrick, and Cameron Foster pitched 5.1 innings of one-run baseball in relief to help secure the victory. Foster recorded a three-inning save and recorded all nine outs via the strikeout. 

Key Moments:

  • Southern's J. Dorris opened the scoring with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first.
  • Julian Gonzales led off the top of the second with a towering blast over the right-field wall to even the score. 
  • Payton Harden doubled to right-center, stole a base, and would then come around to score the Poke's second run of the second inning on a passed ball. 
  • Brad Burckel reached to start the third on a throwing error by the pitcher, he would advance to second on Tre' Obregon III's single to right and would score on a fielder's choice.
  • Peyton Johnson recorded a sac fly in the top of the fourth to plate Jordan Yeatts.
  • Southern's T. Spears homered with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Cowboy lead to 4-2.
  • Southern would make things tighter thanks to an RBI double in the fifth.
  • After two scoreless innings, Julian Gonzales homered to right center scoring Obregon who lead the inning off with a single to give the Pokes a 6-3 lead in the eighth.
  • The Pokes would score run number seven later that inning on Peyton Johnson's RBI single up the middle. 

Notes:

  • Julian Gonzales recorded his second career multi-homer game. His first HR was the 100th hit of his career.
  • Burrell Jones recorded his first win as a Cowboy.
  • Cameron Foster recorded his third save of the season, tied for the second-most in D1. 
  • Tre' Obregon III went 2-5 with a run scored, his third multi-hit game of the season. 
  • Payton Harden went 2-4 with two runs scored, his fourth multi-hit game in a row.
  • Peyton Johnson went 1-3 with two runs batted in. 
  • J. Gonzales & Harden each swiped a bag.
  • The staff recorded 13 punchouts.
