LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball opened its 2023 season Friday with wins over Idaho State and Texas Southern in the first day of the Cowgirl Classic I.
McNeese (2-0) defeated Idaho State 7-2 in its season opener then concluded Day 1 with a 6-1 win over Texas Southern. The Cowgirls will face Texas Southern at 5:30 p.m. and Central Arkansas at 8 p.m. Saturday before concluding tournament play at 12:30 p.m. Sunday against UAB.
Senior
Alayis Seneca led the Cowgirls at the plate on Friday, going 4 for 8 with a triple, one RBI, one stolen base, and scored three runs.
Whitney Tate picked up the win over Idaho State, going the distance and allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap against Texas Southern,
Shaelyn Sanders picked up the win, allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
Freshman
Ryann Schexnayder pitched one inning in relief and struck out two of three batters she faced.
As a team, McNeese combined for 18 hits on the day including five extra base hits and seven stolen bases.
